BREAST LUMP

An immediate checkup is necessary if one feels a lump in their breast or under their arm. A breast lump is a mass that develops in the breast. While a breast lump can be a sign of breast cancer, often it is unrelated to cancer; eight out of ten breast lumps are noncancerous. A breast lump may feel like a frozen pea or lima bean, or it might feel hard or different from the rest of our breast tissue. These are some of the symptoms of breast cancer.

CAUSES OF BREAST LUMP

Breast lumps can have a variety of causes, such as:

  • Changes in the breast tissue (fibrocystic changes):Fibrous (rubbery) tissue and tiny, fluid-filled sacs have a lumpy sensation.
  • Breast cysts:Cysts are common in premenopausal women and are fluid-filled sacs that develop when fluid gets stuck in the milk ducts.
  • Fibroadenomas:Fibroadenomas are most prevalent in women between the ages of 20 and 30 and are benign (noncancerous) breast tumors that are most common in young women.
  • Breast infection-A lump in the breast tissue may result from an infection.
  • Breast cancer-A lump in the breast is the result of a tumor growing there.

PREVENTION OF BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer cannot be cured, but certain lifestyle choices can greatly lower the risk of developing breast cancer as well as other types.

These include:

  • Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption
  • adopting a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables and other healthy foods
  • Getting enough exercise
  • body mass index (BMI) maintenance
  • Keep an eye out for breast changes and let your doctor know if you have any worries.
  • Discuss screening options with your healthcare provider.
