Neisseria gonorroea, a gram-negative diplococcus that affects both men and women, is the cause of the sexually transmitted disease known as gonorrhea. Gonorrhea typically affects the urethra, rectum, or throat, though it can also affect the cervix in females.

Babies of infected mothers can become infected during childbirth, and gonorrhea most frequently affects the eyes in infants. Gonorrhea is most commonly spread during vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

The best ways to avoid STIs are to avoid having sex altogether, use condoms while doing so, and maintain a mutually monogamous relationship.
