HOMEOPATHY FOR ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS

69

Lower back pain is a common symptom of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a form of arthritis that can also cause hip pain and stiffness. Over time, the spinal column’s vertebrae may fuse together and become rigid.

The name AS, which means “inflammation of the vertebral column,” is derived from the Greek words “Ankylos,” which means “fusion,” and “Spondylos,” which means “vertebra,” and is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the spine.

Sacroiliitis, an inflammation of the sacroiliac joints between the base of the spine and the pelvis, is one of the symptoms of AS. Spondylitis, an inflammation of the joints between the vertebrae that make up the spinal column, is a common complication of AS.

The condition known as ankylosis, in which new bone formations may fuse vertebrae sections together, making the spine rigid, affects some people with AS and causes severe, ongoing back and hip pain and stiffness; other people with AS experience milder symptoms that come and go.

Causes

Bacteria like Klebsiella pneumae and some other enterobacterias may cause ankylosing spondylitis, though its exact cause is unknown; however, genetic factors, particularly the presence of the HLA-B27 gene, place those who carry it at a significantly higher risk of developing the condition.

Symptoms

Some people have milder symptoms, while others have more severe symptoms; symptoms may flare up and improve intermittently. Symptoms typically appear between the ages of 17 and 45.
