NAIL SPLITTING/ ONYCHOSCHIZIA

Nail splitting, also referred to as onychoschizia, onychoschisis, or lamellar dystrophy, is a condition that results in a horizontal split within the nail plate. Nail splitting is frequently seen in conjunction with onychorrhesis, which causes long-wise (longitudinal) splitting or ridging of the name plate; the two diseases are collectively referred to as “brittle nail syndrome.”

Nearly 20% of people have brittle nails, with women and older people experiencing it more frequently.

Causes

Cleaning staff, nurses, and hairstylists are more likely to experience this condition than the general population.

Nail polish removers/solvents, hardeners, polish, and other nail care products, as well as occupational exposure to a variety of chemicals like alkalis, acids, cement, solvents, thioglycolates, salt, sugar, and solutions.

· Trauma.

Health issues, such as malnutrition, Sjogren syndrome, tuberculosis, and endocrine disorders.

· Anemia.

Individuals taking vitamin A-based oral medications.

• Skin conditions like psoriasis and lichen planus.

Signs and symptoms

At the growing end, there can be a single horizontal split between layers of the nail plate, or there can be multiple splits and loosening of the nail plate’s growing edge.

Onychorrhexis, longitudinal ridging, and horizontal nail splitting are all possible co-occurring nail conditions.

If you have psoriasis, lichen planus, or take oral vitamin A medications, you might notice a horizontal split at the base of your nail plate.

General measures

Reduce the number of times you soak and dry your nails.

Wear thin cotton gloves over plastic or rubber gloves whenever you’re preparing food or performing any other household task.

Increase the water content of the nails by giving them a daily 15-minute soak in water.

Maintain short fingernails to prevent nail splitting from getting worse.

Apply moisturizers to the nails to increase hydration, such as petroleum jelly.

Apply these hardeners only to the free edge (growing end) of the nail as they contain formaldehyde, which can increase nail strength but should be used with caution as it can lead to brittleness and other nail issues.

Hardeners that contain acrylates are also efficient but could result in a skin allergy.

HOMOEOPATHY REMEDIES

When it comes to NAIL SPLITTING, there are many effective medicines available in homoeopathy, but the choice depends on the individuality of the patient, taking the patient’s mental and physical health into consideration. Homoeopathy is a growing system that is being practiced all over the world. Its strength lies in its evident effectiveness as it takes a holistic approach towards the sick individual by promoting inner balance at mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical levels.
