Although your body needs cholesterol to keep forming healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that’s found in the fats (lipids) in your blood.

When your cholesterol levels are high, you may form fatty deposits in your blood vessels that eventually restrict the amount of blood that can flow through them. This raises your risk of having a heart attack and a stroke because your heart may not receive enough oxygen-rich blood.

A healthy diet, regular exercise, and occasionally medication can go a long way toward reducing high cholesterol. While high cholesterol can be inherited, it’s frequently the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices, making it preventable and treatable.

A lipoprotein is a combination of proteins and cholesterol that is transported through the blood. Depending on the type of cholesterol the lipoprotein carries, there are several different types of cholesterol that you may have heard of:

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL).LDL cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol, is the carrier of cholesterol in your body and accumulates in the artery walls, hardening and constricting them.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL).Excess cholesterol is gathered and transported back to your liver by HDL, or “good” cholesterol.

High LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol are caused by a number of factors, some of which are under your control, including obesity, lack of exercise, and a poor diet.

SymptomsThe only way to diagnose high cholesterol is through a blood test because it has no symptoms.

Your risk of having high cholesterol may be impacted by the following risk factors:

Poor diet.Eating trans fats, which are present in some commercially baked cookies and crackers, and saturated fats, which are present in animal products, can raise your cholesterol levels. Eating foods high in cholesterol, such as red meat and full-fat dairy products, will also raise your total cholesterol.

Obesity. You run the risk of having high cholesterol if your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher.

Large waist circumference. If you are a man or woman with a waist measurement of at least 40 inches (102 centimeters) or 35 inches (89 centimeters), respectively, your risk increases.

Lack of exercise. In addition to increasing the size of the particles that make up your LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, exercise also helps to increase your body’s HDL, or “good” cholesterol. This reduces the risk of your LDL becoming harmful.

Smoking.Smoking can lower your HDL, or “good,” cholesterol levels and harm the blood vessel walls, increasing the likelihood that fatty deposits will build up.

Diabetes. In addition to damaging the lining of your arteries, high blood sugar raises LDL cholesterol while lowering HDL cholesterol.

COMPLICATIONS–High cholesterol can result in atherosclerosis, a dangerous buildup of cholesterol and other deposits on the lining of your arteries, which can impair blood flow and result in complications like:

Chest pain. You may experience chest pain (angina) and other signs of coronary artery disease if your heart’s blood-supplying arteries (coronary arteries) are compromised.

Heart attack. If plaques tear or rupture, a blood clot may form at the plaque-rupture site, obstructing blood flow or rupturing and obstructing an artery downstream. If blood flow to part of your heart stops, you’ll experience a heart attack.

Stroke.A stroke happens when a blood clot prevents blood flow to a portion of your brain, much like a heart attack does.
