CAUSES OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

The autoimmune disease known as multiple sclerosis (MS), in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues, is thought to have no known cause. In MS, this immune system malfunction results in the destruction of the fatty substance (myelin), which coats and protects nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord.

When the protective myelin is damaged and nerve fiber is exposed, the messages that travel along that nerve may be slowed or blocked, and the nerve may also sustain damage. Myelin is like the insulation coating on electrical wires.
