Causes

You catch pinworms by accidently eating or breathing in pinworm eggs, and pinworm infections are very contagious.

The cycle of infection starts with the ingestion of these microscopic eggs, which are typically shed onto a surface or object by a person who has been infected.

The female pinworms move into the colon as adults and leave the body through the anus at night after the eggs have entered your body, where they remain until they hatch and mature.

Anal itching and irritation are frequently brought on by the presence of the pinworm eggs, which the females deposit in the skin folds surrounding the anus before returning to the colon.

Pinworm eggs can survive on your hands for several hours before being transferred to your fingers when you scratch the affected area.

Pinworm eggs can remain on contaminated surfaces for up to three weeks, so they can spread to household items like bedding, clothing, toilet seats, or toys if an infected person touches them.

Children are particularly vulnerable to pinworm transmission because they frequently put contaminated toys or other objects directly into their mouths.

Adults can also breathe in airborne eggs by shaking contaminated bedding, towels, or clothing, though this is rare.

Scratching an infected area can result in accidental ingestion, which can cause reinfection and a restart of the pinworm life cycle. Pinworms typically have a lifespan of up to 13 weeks.

If the infection is left untreated, it may occasionally hatch from the anus eggs, releasing the pinworm larvae that originally infected the intestine.
