Sciatica, which usually only affects one side of our body, is a type of pain that travels down one leg along the path of the sciatic nerve, which originates in our lower back and branches out into our hips and buttocks.

Sciatica is most frequently caused by compression of a nerve by a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine, or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis), which results in inflammation, pain, and occasionally some numbness in the affected leg.

Although sciatica pain can be extremely painful, the majority of cases get better in a few weeks with non-operative treatments.

SYMPTOMS OF SCIATICA

Sciatica is characterized by pain that travels along the nerve pathway from the lower (lumbar) spine to the buttock, back of the thigh, and calf. Although the pain can occur almost anywhere along the nerve pathway, it is most likely to travel along this pathway from the low back to the buttock, back of the thigh, and calf.

When we cough or sneeze, the pain may become worse, and prolonged sitting may make symptoms worse. Usually, only one side of our bodies is affected. The pain can vary greatly, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating pain. Sometimes it may feel like a jolt or electric shock.

One may experience pain in one area of their leg and numbness in another, as well as tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.

CAUSES OF SCIATICA

Sciatica is a condition that develops when the sciatic nerve is compressed, most commonly by a herniated disk in the spine or a bone spur on the vertebrae, but more rarely by a tumor or being harmed by a condition like diabetes.

Risk factors

Sciatica is at risk for a number of things.

  • Age:The most frequent causes of sciatica are changes in the spine brought on by aging, including herniated disks and bone spurs.
  • Obesity:Excess body weight can cause spinal changes that lead to sciatica by putting more strain on our spine.
  • Occupation:Sciatica may be caused by a job that requires us to bend over, lift heavy objects, or drive a car for extended periods of time.
  • Prolonged sitting:Sciatica is more common in sedentary individuals than in physically active individuals, especially in those who spend a lot of time sitting.
  • Diabetes:This condition raises our risk of nerve damage by affecting how our body uses blood sugar.

COMPLICATION OF SCIATICA

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should see a doctor right away.

  • the affected leg losing its sensation
  • An affected leg’s weakness
  • losing the ability to urinate or eat

PREVENTION OF SCIATICA

The following can be extremely important in safeguarding our back, as sciatica is a condition that is not always treatable and may return.

  • Exercise frequently. Pay special attention to your core muscles, which are located in your lower back and abdomen and are crucial for maintaining a healthy posture.
  • Keep your knees and hips level, keep your back straight, and choose a seat with armrests, a swivel base, and good lower back support.
  • Use proper body mechanics when lifting heavy objects, including moving straight up and down, keeping the back straight, bending only at the knees, holding the load close to the body, avoiding lifting and twisting at the same time, and occasionally resting one foot on a stool or small box if one is standing for an extended period of time.
