These hollow spaces in our cheeks and around our eyes are called sinus cavities, and sinusitis, which frequently follows a cold, is an infection or inflammation of the lining of these cavities.

There are two types of sinusitis: acute (sudden) and chronic (long-lasting), the latter of which lasts for at least eight weeks before the infection or inflammation completely subsides.

Since they encircle the nasal cavity, these are also referred to as the para-nasal sinuses.

  • frontal sinuses in the region of the brow, above the eyes
  • Each cheekbone contains a maxillary sinus.
  • In between the eyes and behind the nose bridge are the ethmoid sinuses.
  • In the upper part of the nose, behind the eyes, and behind the ethmoids are sphenoid sinuses.

Classification of Sinusitis

According to how long it lasts, there are several types of sinusitis

  • Acute sinusitis
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Recurrent sinusitis

CAUSES OF SINUSITIS

This condition’s typical contributing factors include

  • Viruses
  • Bacteria
  • Fungus
  • Excessive nose blowing
  • In the nostrils of children, especially, are foreign objects
  • Scuba diving
  • certain medications’ side effects
  • Tooth caries
  • Allergies

Anything that prevents airflow into the sinuses and the drainage of mucus from the sinuses, such as colds, allergies, and tissue irritants (such as OTC nasal sprays, “coke,” and cigarette smoke), can block the sinus openings, which can lead to sinus infection. Sinuses can also become blocked by tumors or growths that are close to the sinus ostia.

The mucous producing cells have small hair-like fibers, known as cilia, which move back and forth to help the mucous move out of the sinuses. These small cilia may be damaged by many irritants, especially irritants that are inhaled, such as dust, pollen, and smoke.
