Symptoms

The following are symptoms and signs of superficial thrombophlebitis:

  • Affected area feels warm, tender, and painful.
  • Redness and swelling

the following are symptoms and signs of deep vein thrombosis:

  • Pain
  • Swelling

When a deep vein in the leg is affected, the leg may become swollen, tender, and painful. When a vein close to the surface of the skin is affected, a red, hard cord that is tender to the touch may appear just under the surface of the skin.

Causes

A blood clot can form in blood as a result of any of the following, which can lead to thrombophlebitis:

  • the damage to a vein
  • An inherited blood-clotting disorder
  • being immobile for an extended period of time, such as when injured or hospitalized

Risk factors

If any of the following apply to you:

  • being bedridden, spending a lot of time in a car or on a plane, or otherwise being inactive for an extended period of time
  • Possess varicose veins, a common factor in the development of superficial thrombophlebitis.
  • possess a pacemaker or a thin, flexible tube (catheter) inserted into a vein in the middle of the body to treat a condition that could irritate the blood vessel wall and reduce blood flow.
  • are expecting a child or recently gave birth
  • Use contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy to prevent blood clots, which can increase your risk of bleeding.
  • possess a tendency to develop blood clots or a family history of blood clotting issues
  • have experienced thrombophlebitis in the past
  • Have had a stroke
  • Are older than 60
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Have cancer
  • Smoke

When planning long flights, road trips, or elective surgery that will require you to stay immobile while recovering, bring up prevention strategies with your doctor if you have one or more risk factors.

Complications

Since DVT increases the risk of serious complications, complications from superficial thrombophlebitis are more common. Potential complications include:

  • Pulmonary embolism. If a piece of a deep vein clot escapes, it might end up in your lungs, where it might embolize and endanger your life.
  • Post-phlebetic syndrome.Post-thrombotic syndrome, which is another name for this condition, can appear months or even years after a DVT and can result in long-lasting and potentially crippling pain, swelling, and a sensation of heaviness in the affected leg.

Prevention

Your risk of developing thrombophlebitis increases if you sit down for a prolonged period of time, such as on a long flight or in a car.

  • Take a walk.Walk up and down the aisle once every hour or so if you’re flying, taking the train, or a bus; if you’re driving, pull over once every hour or so and take a break.
  • Move your legs regularly. At least ten times an hour, gently press your feet against the floor or footrest in front of you while flexing your ankles.
  • Drink plentyof non-alcoholic beverages, such as water, to prevent dehydration.
