The term “trigger” refers to a sudden popping back of the finger, similar to the release of a trigger in a gun. This mechanism is similar to the operation of a pulley. The condition is also known as trigger finger or tenosynovitis, which means inflammation of the tendon. A tendon is a flexible elastic cord of collagen tissue attached to a muscle or bone.

The thumb, index finger, middle finger, and ring finger are the most commonly affected fingers, but it can also affect more than one finger. It is caused by imbalance and inflammation in the tendons at the base of the fingers and thumb.

Trigger finger is one of the common causes of hand pain in adults, with an estimated prevalence of 2% of the general population. It affects more women than men in their fifth or sixth decade of life.

Causes of Trigger Finger :

It is also linked to certain underlying medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, gout, diabetes, carpal tunnel syndrome, and may develop as a result of hand surgery; however, the exact cause is still unknown. This condition is seen where the work requires repeated strong catching movements, such as gripping onto some object.

Symptoms of Trigger Finger :

  • The affected finger or thumb’s base may be a little sore for the patient.
  • Restriction in finger movements
  • Tenderness on pressure
  • In the impacted area, a lump or swelling
  • Painful finger movements
  • Catching, popping feeling
  • The majority of the time, symptoms worsen at night, in the morning, or when firmly grasping an object.

Diagnosis:

A thorough case history and a good physical examination are frequently used to clinically diagnose trigger finger.

Treatment : Conventional treatment

In some severe cases, surgery may be indicated. Splinting the affected finger at night is also advised to get relief from swelling and pain. Conventional or allopathic treatment typically involves painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and local steroid injections, all of which are temporarily effective and help to give quick symptomatic relief.

Homeopathic treatment of Trigger Finger :

Early diagnosis, prompt homeopathic treatment, along with specific hand exercises, help in providing significant relief for the treatment of trigger finger. There are some homeopathic medicines which help in relieving the stiffness, inflammation of the underlying tendon, thereby reducing pain and easing out finger movements. Surgery can be delayed if the patient is willing to wait.
