About Baidyanath Kapardak Bhasma (Varatika Bhasma)

There are several names for cowrie in Ayurveda, including Varata, Varatika, Kapardik, and Kapardika. There are primarily three types based on color: red, white, and yellow.

The term “cowry” is frequently used to describe the external shell of the Indo-Pacific seacoast-dwelling sea creature Cyprea moneta, also known as the “money cowry,” which is made chemically of calcium carbonate and was once used as currency.

Varatika is a mineral drug of animal origin that is used in Ayurveda as a powder made by calcining cowries. It has antacid, alterative, diuretic, anti-diarrheic, digestive, and expectorant properties.

Intestinal tuberculosis, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, peptic ulcers, sprue syndrome, cataracts, otorrhea, enlarged spleen and liver, asthma, and cough are all conditions that can be treated with Kapardak Bhasma.

Additionally, it is applied externally in a variety of ointments as a caustic.
