Iceland’s most active and well-known volcano, Hekla, is located in the south of the island and is part of the East Volcanic Zone.

Old stories mention the notion that condemned souls passed through Hekla’s crater on their way to Hell, while others claim that witches had a meeting with the devil on its summit, earning it the moniker “the Gateway to Hell” or “Mountain of Hell.”

Between 1104 and 2000, Hekla, also known as the Mountain of Hell, erupted more than 20 times, with the most powerful eruptions taking place in 1300, 1766, and 1947-48. The 1766 explosion resulted in significant human casualties, and the 1947-48 eruption lasted for 13 months and sent an ash cloud nearly 16 miles (27 km) into the atmosphere, with ash falling as far away as Finland.

Silica, alumina, lime, magnesium, and iron oxide are all found in the ash that is closer to the volcano and is thought to be inert.

PART USEDInsoluble in water and alcohol but slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid, fine ash from Mount Hekla is a blackish brown, amorphous powder or a porous mass that is very light, odorless, tasteless, and acidic after a while.

PROVERIt is mentioned in the American Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia, 1980; 245 and the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States, 7th edition, at 319. It was developed and demonstrated by Morris of University College, London.

Garth Wilkinson observed a number of effects while traveling in Iceland, including the drying up of milk in both sheep and cows and the presence of enormous bony growths on the jaws in the sheep living close to Hekla.
