Meniere’s disease is an inner ear disorder that results in vertigo attacks, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and a pressure or fullness in the ear.
Meniere’s disease, which affects both men and women equally, affects 2 out of every 1000 people, most commonly affecting those in their 40s and 50s, though it can also affect those as young as 20.
SYMPTOMS OF MENIERE’S DISEASE
The signs and symptoms of Meniere’s disease are diverse; a typical attack is preceded by fullness in one or both ears, and the symptoms typically include imbalance, vertigo, tinnitus (ear ringing), sweating, and nausea.
Attacks can range in severity and frequency, but they typically last for several hours or even days, are followed by extreme exhaustion, and cause the victim to sleep for a substantial amount of time.
Meniere’s disease typically causes the following symptoms:
Vertigo
This is a subjective sensation of rotation (either of oneself or the environment), which can be severe and have a sudden onset along with sweating, nausea, and vomiting.
Tinnitus
Usually one ear is affected, but it is not uncommon for both ears to be affected, and there is a subjective feeling of ringing, roaring, or swooshing in the ears.
Hearing loss or deafness
Lower frequencies are initially the first to go when there is a bilateral or unilateral progressive hearing loss.
Fullness in both ears
Even though swallowing doesn’t provide relief, there is a feeling of fullness in the ears that is comparable to the feeling of pressure changes.
Photophobia
One typical symptom is an increase in light sensitivity, which makes headaches and vertigo worse.
