Sycon gelatinosum Blainville, the species name.

CLASS: Porifera

COMMON NAMES: Roasted sponge.

The spongy portion of the sponge is soft, elastic, and compressible and is traversed by many lacunae, with circular openings on the surface. Bleached sponges are not suitable for medicinal purposes, so those selected pieces are roasted until brown and friable. The horny skeleton from which the desired substance is prepared consists primarily of siliceous or calcareous matter.

DISTRIBUTION: Near Greece and Syria in the Mediterranean.

HOMOEOPATHIC USES

CROUP: Breathing is short and labored, with a feeling that the larynx is plugged, and the cough has a saw-like sound. Croup is worse before bedtime and during inspiration.

COUGH: Starts after eating or drinking, especially warm beverages. Cough is dry and barking with a sound like wood being sawed.

A remedy for heart valvular diseases, ANGINA PECTORIS is used when a patient awakens unexpectedly after midnight with pain and suffocation, rapid and violent palpitations, dyspnea, and an inability to lie down. The patient also experiences anxiety and a fear of dying.

GOITRE: Goiter with suffocative spells, worse touching neck or pressure or heart pains, swallows water in small amounts and with difficulty, is numb on the outside, has swollen thyroid glands even on the chin, and is extremely hungry.

EPIDIDYMITIS: Testicles and spermatic cord swelling that is painful and tender.

LYMPH GLANDS: Indurations and swelling of the lymph glands; swollen cervical glands that hurt when the head is turned or touched.
