The small brain (cerebellum) is displaced (herniated) downward through an opening at the base of the skull in Arnold- Chiari malformations, a condition that causes structural defects in the lower part of the brain and disrupts the normal flow of the cerebrospinal fluid, which travels between the brain and the spine.
In honor of German pathologist Julius Arnold and Austrian pathologist Chiari, this type 2 Chiari malformation was given that name. Type 1 Chiari malformation is a congenital deformity involving connective tissue disorders.
