The lower portion of the uterus that connects to the vagina, known as the cervix, is where cervical cancer typically develops.

Most cervical cancers are primarily brought on by the sexually transmitted infection known as the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

Most often, there are no symptoms or signs of early-stage cervical cancer.

More severe cervical cancer symptoms and signs include:

  • bleeding from the vagina following sex, during periods, or following menopause
  • Vaginal discharge that is usually watery, bloody, heavy, and smells bad
  • Pain in the pelvis or during sexual activity

Causes of Cervical Cancer

A cell’s DNA, which contains the instructions that determine what a cell should do, changes (mutates) when healthy cells in the cervix give rise to cervical cancer.

The mutations instruct the cells to grow and multiply out of control and not die, which causes the accumulating abnormal cells to form a mass (tumor), which is then invaded by cancer cells that can then spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body.

HPV is very common, and most people with the virus never develop cancer, so other factors — such as your environment or lifestyle — also determine whether you’ll develop cervical cancer. However, it’s clear that HPV plays a role in the development of cervical cancer, and it’s known that this virus plays a role in cervical cancer.

Types of Cervical Cancer

Your prognosis and course of treatment are influenced by the type of cervical cancer you have; there are three main types:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma. Most cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, and they start in the thin, flat cells (squamous cells) lining the outer part of the cervix which projects into the vagina.
  • Adenocarcinoma. The glandular cells that line the cervical canal and have the shape of columns are where this type of cervical cancer develops.

Rarely, cancer develops in other cervix cells, and occasionally both types of cells are involved in the development of cervical cancer.

Risk factors

cervical cancer risk elements include:

  • Many sexual partners. You have a higher chance of contracting HPV if you have more sexual partners overall, as well as if your partner has more partners overall.
  • Early sexual activity.Early adolescent sexual activity increases HPV risk.
  • Other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).Your risk of HPV is increased if you also have other STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, or HIV/AIDS.
  • A weakened immune system. If you have HPV and your immune system is already compromised due to another medical condition, you may be at an increased risk of developing cervical cancer.
  • Smoking.Squamous cell cervical cancer and smoking go hand in hand.
  • Exposure to miscarriage prevention drug. You may be at a higher risk of developing clear cell adenocarcinoma, a specific type of cervical cancer, if your mother used the medication diethylstilbestrol (DES) while she was pregnant in the 1950s.

Prevention of Cervical Cancer

lowering the chance of cervical cancer

  • Have routine Pap tests. The majority of medical organizations advise starting routine Pap tests at age 21 and repeating them every few years because they can identify precancerous conditions of the cervix that can be monitored or treated to prevent cervical cancer.
  • Practice safe sex.By taking steps to prevent STDs, like using a condom each time you have sex and reducing the number of partners you have for sex, you can lower your risk of developing cervical cancer.
  • Don’t smoke.Don’t start if you don’t already smoke, and if you do, talk to your doctor about ways to stop.

Do regular exercise
