The cervix is the narrow canal at the base of the uterus that extends into the vagina. The cervix serves as the pathway for sperm to fertilize an egg, which may result in pregnancy. During labor, the cervix becomes thinner and wider to facilitate the passage of the baby through the birth canal. Cervical polyps are small, elongated tumors that develop on the cervix.

If someone has polyps, usually only one, and possibly two or three polyps are present. Polyps are delicate structures that grow from stalks rooted on the surface of the cervix or inside the cervical canal.

The majority of cervical cancers are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), which also causes genital warts. Cervical polyps are typically benign, or not cancerous, and cervical cancer rarely develops from them.

SYMPTOMS OF CERVICITIS

While experiencing vaginal discharge of white or yellow mucus or unusually heavy periods may indicate the presence of cervix polyps, these symptoms are not always present.

In the event of vaginal bleeding or spotting:

  • After sexual intercourse
  • Between periods
  • After douching
  • After menopause

In rare instances, polyps are an early stage of cervical cancer; removing them helps lower the risk. Some of these symptoms can also be indications of cancer.

CAUSES OF CERVICITIS

Cervical polyps can develop for unknown reasons, but they may be related to:

  • the female sex hormone, estrogen, is present in higher amounts
  • Chronic vaginal, cervix, or uterine inflammation
  • Clogged blood vessels

High estrogen levels

Estrogen levels naturally change over the course of a woman’s life. During the menopausal months, during any pregnancies, and during the childbearing years, estrogen levels will be at their highest.

Environmental estrogen mimics include xenoestrogens, which are found in commercially produced meats and dairy products, phthalates, which are found in some air fresheners, and chemical estrogens, which can leach into heated food when it is stored in plastic or plastic foam containers.

Inflammation

The cervix can become red, irritated, or eroded when it is inflamed, and several conditions are known to contribute to this condition:

  • Bacterial infection
  • Warts may also develop as a result of HPV infection.
  • Herpes
  • Yeast infections
  • Pregnancy
  • Miscarriage
  • Abortion
  • Hormonal changes
