HOMOEOPATHY FOR CRYING CHILDREN

67

The majority of crying is a response to hunger, discomfort (such as that caused by a wet diaper), fear, or separation from parents. Such crying is normal and typically stops when the needs are metβ€”for example, when infants are fed, burped, changed, or cuddled. After children are 3 months old, this crying tends to occur less frequently and for shorter periods of time.

When a child cries excessively, it’s because their needs are not being met on a regular basis or because their crying is lasting longer than usual.

Although such crying is stressful for parents, children eventually settle down and stop crying on their own. **Causes–**More than 95% of the time, there is no particular medical disorder responsible for excessive crying.

Between the ages of 6 months and 3 years, crying at night is frequently caused by difficulty falling back to sleep after regular night awakenings. Falling back to sleep on their own is particularly challenging for children who are used to falling asleep under certain conditions such as while being rocked or with a pacifier. Fatigue is a common cause of crying in infants.

After age 3, it’s normal for children to experience night terrors, which are episodes of fearful crying in the middle of the night when a child doesn’t seem to be awake or able to be comforted and has no memory of the crying when they wake up the next morning.

MEDICAL DISORDERS

A middle ear infection, hair wrapped around a finger or toe (hair tourniquet), a scratch on the surface of the eye (corneal abrasion), an anal fissure, and gastroesophageal reflux are some less serious conditions that can cause excessive crying. Less than 5% of the time, excessive crying is brought on by a medical disorder.

Less frequently, a serious disorder such as a blocked intestine brought on by intussusception (the sliding of one segment of the intestine into another) and volvulus (the twisting of the intestine), as well as heart failure, meningitis, and head injuries that bring on bleeding within the skull, is the cause. Infants with such severe disorders often have other symptoms (such as vomiting or fever), which alert parents to the presence of a more serious problem.

ColicColic, which typically affects babies between the ages of 6 weeks and 3 or 4 months, is defined as prolonged crying that lasts for at least three hours per day, at least three days per week, for longer than three weeks.

Warning signs

Concerning signs that point to a health condition that may be the source of the crying include the following:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • head or other body parts having bruising or swelling
  • Any body part that twitches or moves abnormally
  • Extreme irritability (cries or acts of distress occur when handling or moving things normally)
  • The presence of a fever and persistent crying in particular
  • Infant fever before 8 weeks of age
