Gallstones, which are tiny stones that form in the gallbladder and are typically made of cholesterol, can block the cystic duct, which is the gallbladder’s main opening, causing acute cholecystitis, or gallbladder inflammation.

The epigastria and right hypogastria are extremely painful, radiating to the back and shoulder, and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. There may also be mild jaundice. Murphy’s sign is positive. This is typically seen in women between the ages of 20 and 40, but it can happen to anyone.

SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE CHOLECYSTITIS

Cholecystitis symptoms and signs can include:

  • severe abdominal pain in the upper right or middle
  • Right shoulder or back pain that is spreading
  • abdomen feels delicate to the touch.
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

Signs and symptoms of cholecystitis frequently appear following a meal, especially one that is substantial or fatty.

CAUSESA OF ACUTE CHOLECYSTITIS

Inflammation of the gallbladder, which can result in cholecystitis, can be brought on by:

  • Gallstones.Gallstones, which are hard objects that form in the gallbladder and can obstruct the cystic duct, the tube through which bile exits the gallbladder, are the most common cause of cholecystitis.
  • Tumor.Bile buildup that can result in cholecystitis may be brought on by a tumor that prevents the gallbladder’s bile from properly draining.
  • Bile duct blockage.Cholecystitis can result from blockages in the bile ducts brought on by kinking or scarring.
  • Infection.Inflammation of the gallbladder can be brought on by AIDS and specific viral infections.
  • Blood vessel problems.Cholecystitis can be brought on by an illness that is so severe that it damages blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the gallbladder.

RISK FACTORS

The main factor increasing your risk of getting cholecystitis is having gallstones.

COMPLICATION OF ACUTE CHOLECYSTITIS

Numerous severe complications, such as the following, can result from cholecystitis:

  • Infection within the gallbladder. The bile may become infected if the gallbladder develops cholecystitis due to bile buildup.
  • Death of gallbladder tissue. The most frequent complication of untreated cholecystitis is gangrene, which can lead to a tear in the gallbladder or even cause the gallbladder to burst, especially in older patients, those who delay seeking treatment, and those with diabetes.
  • Torn gallbladder. An infection, gallbladder swelling, or tissue death can all cause a tear (perforation) in the gallbladder.

PREVENTION OF ACUTE CHOLECYSTITIS

The following measures can be taken to lower your risk of developing cholecystitis:

  1. Lose weight slowly. If you need to lose weight, aim for a weekly loss of 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to about 1 kilogram), as rapid weight loss can increase your risk of gallstones.
  2. Maintain a healthy weight. To lose weight, increase physical activity, cut calories, as being overweight increases the risk of gallstones.
  3. Choose a healthy diet.A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will reduce your risk while a diet low in fat and high in fiber may increase your risk.
