Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis or pollinosis, is an allergy that is typically brought on by an allergy to an airborne substance such as dust, mold, pollen, animal fur, or feathers. It is frequently made worse by a food allergy, with milk allergies being the most common cause of aggravation.

People with a personal history of eczema, hives (urticaria), or asthma are more likely to experience hay fever than those without such a history.

Symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis

  • congestion in the nose and a runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes that are irritated by allergens
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • a scratchy throat, nose, or lips
  • Under-eye skin that is swollen and blue in color due to an allergy
  • Postnasal drip
  • Fatigue

Seasonal factors

  • Early spring is often when tree pollen is present.
  • Late spring and summer are prime times for grass pollen.
  • Fall brings out a lot of ragweed pollen.
  • Year-round (perennial) annoyances include dust mites, cockroaches, and pet dander, which may be more problematic in the winter when homes are closed up.
  • Both seasonal and perennial spores are found in both indoor and outdoor fungi and molds.

Hay fever or common cold ?

It can be challenging to differentiate between symptoms and signs because they can be similar.

ConditionSigns and symptomsOnsetDuration

Hay fever

immediately following exposure to allergens; thin, watery discharge from the nose; no fever; as long as exposure to allergens continues

Common cold

One to three days following exposure to a cold virus, bodyaches, low-grade fever, and runny nose with watery or thick yellow discharge.

Causes of Allergic Rhinitis

When a harmless airborne substance enters our bodies, our immune system recognizes it as harmful and produces antibodies against it. When these antibodies come into contact with the harmless substance, the antibodies tell our immune system to release histamine into the bloodstream, which sets off a chain reaction that results in the symptoms of hay fever.

Risk factors of Allergic Rhinitis

We are more likely to get hay fever if we have the following factors:

  • asthmatic or allergic to other things
  • Having atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • having a blood relative with allergies or asthma (like a parent or sibling
  • Being surrounded by allergens, such as dust mites or animal dander, all the time while living or working
  • the first year of your life was spent with a smoking mother
