BOTANICAL NAME—Allium ursinum Linn.

FAMILY—Liliaceae

Common names for this plant include Ramsons, Buckrams, Wild garlic, Broad-leaved Garlic, Wood Garlic, Bear Leek, or Bear’s Garlic.

DISTRIBUTIONThe majority of the lowland British Isles, with the exception of the far north of Scotland, Orkney, Shetland, and the Channel Islands, are home to this species, which is native to temperate regions of Europe, ranging from Britain east to the Caucasus.

The bulb of Allium ursinum, which is a bulbous, perennial herbaceous monocot that primarily reproduces by seed, is almost cylindrical, 2-4 to 6 cm long, and about 1 cm in diameter. It is covered in transparent, white or yellowish skins that eventually thin to a few parallel fibers at the base. The base also bears simple roots.

The stem is compact, two-edged, occasionally triangular in cross-section, erect, and between 10 and 50 cm high. At the base, it is surrounded by two, sporadically one or three, foliage leaves.

The lamina of the foliage leaves are flat, narrow, elliptic, lanceolate, or ovate, pointed, 6–20 cm long, 1.5–8 cm wide, and thin, suddenly narrowing down to the stalk at the base, which is rounded or nearly heart-shaped, and the stalk is 5–20 cm long.

The white flowers stand upright on straight stalks and are surrounded by an involucre of two or three ovate, long, pointed bracts that drop off early and are about the same length as the power stalks.
