The lining of the anus has a small cut or tear called an anal fissure, which can occasionally be deep enough to expose the muscle tissue beneath the skin and cause severe pain and some bright red bleeding during and after bowel movements.
Since constipation is a common issue in infants and young children, anal fissures are frequently seen in these age groups. Anal fissures can affect people of all ages, but they are typically not serious conditions.
The fissure is considered chronic if it persists for longer than eight weeks. The tear typically heals on its own within four to six weeks.
