Infantile seborrheic dermatitis is more commonly known as “cradle cap,” which is sometimes mistaken for another skin condition called atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis differs significantly from cradle cap in that it typically causes intense itching.
Cradle cap is a condition that causes thick, difficult-to-remove white or yellow scales on a baby’s scalp in the form of crusty, oily, scaly patches.
Home care methods include washing a baby’s scalp every day with a mild shampoo to help you loosen and remove the scales, as cradle cap typically goes away on its own in a few weeks or months.
SYMPTOMS
Cradle cap symptoms frequently include:
- Scalp crusts that are either thick or patchy
- scales that are flaky and white or yellow and have oily or dry skin
- Skin flakes
- Possibly mild redness
The nose, groin, eyelids, ears, and skin around the eyes may all have comparable scales.

Causes
The exact cause of cradle cap is unknown, but hormones that the mother passes on to the unborn child may be a contributing factor.
Malassezia, a yeast (fungus) that grows in the sebum alongside bacteria and may also be a contributing factor, is supported by the fact that antifungal medications like ketoconazole are frequently effective.
Both poor hygiene and contagiousness are not factors in cradle cap.
Prevention
Keep using mild baby shampoo, unless your baby’s doctor advises using something stronger, and shampoo your baby’s hair every few days to help prevent cradle cap.
HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT
Kali Sulph
When there are yellowish scales on the scalp from cradle cap, a homeopathic remedy is very effective. It is also very helpful when there is a copious discharge that is sticky and moist.
Graphites
Very useful medicineforGraphite also aids in the removal of filthy, crusty, scabby patches on the scalp in cases of cradle cap.
Natrum Mur
When the scalp is extremely greasy, oily, and scaly, with white scales and redness all over the scalp, this medication is very effective for cradle cap. It is also helpful when scabs develop on the scalp, neck, and armpits.
Thuja –
Useful in cases where sweat from the scalp has a peculiar honey-like odor and there are bald patches that extend over the ear and neck.
Mezereum
Useful for cradle cap with thick, leather-like crusts or scabs on the scalp. Useful when discharges from the scabs cause hair to stick together. Useful for white, chalk-like scabs that may spread to the nape of the neck and eyebrows. There is hair loss from the scalp and eyebrows.
