The terms “febrile convulsion” and “febrile fit” refer to the same thing.a seizure associated with a high body temperature but without any serious underlying health issue.

The most common age range for febrile seizures is between 12 and 18 months of age. They typically affect young children between the ages of 3 months and 3 years.Convulsions can occur in a child during a very high fever that is usually over 102.2 to 104°F (39 to 40°C) or higher. This fever will happen rapidly. The rapid change in temperature is more of a factor than how high the fever gets for triggering a seizure.

TYPES OF FEBRILE CONVULSION

1. Simple –More frequently occur simple febrile seizures.

2. Complex-Longer febrile seizures are complex ones.

SYMPTOMS OF FEBRILE CONVULSION

According to the two types, febrile seizures exhibit different symptoms.

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Convulsions or twitching limbs (typically rhythmic)
  • Following the seizure, confusion or fatigue
  • Arm or leg weakness

The most frequent type of seizure is a simple febrile seizure, which typically lasts under two minutes but can last up to fifteen minutes and only occurs once every twenty-four hours.

Symptoms of complex febrile seizure are:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Twitching limbs or convulsions
  • typically in one arm or leg, momentary weakness

Multiple seizures may occur over a 30-minute period in complex febrile seizures, which can last longer than 15 minutes. They can also occur more than once in a 24-hour period.

CAUSES OF FEBRILE CONVULSION

Because febrile seizures typically occur on the first day of an illness, it can often be difficult to tell when a child is sick because they don’t always coincide with other symptoms.

  • MMR (mumps, measles, and rubella) vaccination-related fevers, in particular, can result in febrile seizures.
  • Frequent causes of febrile seizures include the roseola virus and bacterial infections like pneumonia.
  • A child’s chance of experiencing febrile seizures is increased by risk factors like having relatives who have experienced them.
