A pilonidal cyst or sinus is an abnormal pocket of skin that is almost always found at the top of the cleft of the buttocks, close to the tailbone, and typically contains hair and skin debris.

The most common cause of pilonidal cysts is hair that pierces the skin and becomes embedded; the cyst can be surgically removed or drained through a small incision if it becomes infected and causes an excruciating abscess.

People who sit for long periods of time, such as truck drivers, are at higher risk of developing a pilonidal cyst. Pilonidal cysts most frequently affect young men, and the condition has a propensity to recur.

Although the exact cause of pilonidal cysts is unknown, the majority of these lesions appear to be brought on by loose hairs that penetrate the skin as a result of friction and pressure from activities like bicycling, prolonged sitting, skin rubbing against skin, and tight clothing. The body then forms a cyst around the hair in response to the hair’s presence as a foreign object.

This theory explains the rare occurrence of pilonidal cysts outside of the area around the tailbone, such as those that have been reported in the skin between the fingers of barbers, dog groomers, and sheep shearers.

An infected pilonidal cyst manifests as an enlarging mass (abscess) and exhibits the following signs and symptoms:

· Pain

· Reddening of the skin

The flow of blood or pus from a skin wound

Disgusting odor caused by pus draining

Risk factors: Several things can increase your risk of getting pilonidal cysts, including:

· Male sex

Younger age (people in their 20s are most likely to develop pilonidal cysts)

· Obesity

· Inactive lifestyle

· Occupation requiring prolonged sitting

· Excess body hair

· Stiff or coarse hair

Untreated chronic pilonidal cysts can lead to complications, including a slight chance of getting squamous cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer.

Pilonidal cysts can be avoided by trying to:

· Keep the area clean

· Lose weight if needed

· Avoid prolonged sitting

If you’ve previously experienced pilonidal cysts, you may want to regularly shave the affected area or use hair removal products to lower the likelihood of a recurrence.
