The word “ichthyosis,” which means “fish” in Greek, refers to a condition where the skin develops dry, thickened scales or flakes that resemble fish scales.
The condition frequently starts in childhood and typically lasts throughout life.
Types
Ichthyosis can occur in the following forms:
- The majority of people frequently experience ichthyosis vulgaris, which makes up about 95% of all ichthyosis cases.
- Lamellar ichthyosis
- Epidermolytic hyperkeratosis
- X-linked ichthyosis.
Causes :
- It is thought to be a genetic disorder that is either inherited from one’s parents or develops on its own.
- Ichtyosis is a condition where the skin becomes dry from using abrasive soaps or detergents.
- Ichtyosis is exacerbated by dry skin, which is a significant contributing factor of cold weather.
- This could also be brought on by specific soaps or lotions with specific fragrances or perfumes.
- Acquired ichthyosis, which is not inherited and usually first manifests in adulthood, is not contagious but may be brought on by certain medications (such as kava, nicotinic acid, and hydroxyurea) or generalized systemic diseases like underactive thyroid, sarcoidosis, lymphoma, generalized cancer, or HIV.
Signs and Symptoms :
The following are examples of signs and symptoms:
- Itching of skin.
- Skin that is flaky, scaly, and dry.
- Mild itching.
- Body odor.
- Thick scales and cracks.
- Rough skin.
- Ichtyosis may interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature by reducing sweating.
- Moving certain body parts may be too painful due to dry, scaly skin.
- Skin infections and occasionally systemic infections may result from secondary infection brought on by skin cracking and splitting.
- Hearing or vision impairment: Excess skin buildup around the eyes or ears can result in partial deafness or hazy vision.
Homeopathic Treatment
There are some homeopathic remedies used to improve the moisture content in the skin and treat ichthyosis, which is an outbreak on the skin that is dry, crusty, rough, peeling off of the scales, or present as a combination of these.
An individual who practices homeopathy uses Arsenic Iodatum, Sepia Succus, Hydrocotyle Asiatica, Petroleum, and Kali Sulphuricum.
