HISTORY

The Arabic word limun, also known as Limu, is derived from the Sanskrit word nimbuka, and so is the name Limonum.

It is mentioned in J.H. Clarke’s A Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica, Vol. 1, p. 532 and T.F. Allen’s Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica, Vol. 111.

OCCURRENCE & DISTRIBUTION

It is cultivated and grown in orchards in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. It is a native of northern India and can be found in the wild at elevations of 1300 m in the north-western regions of the country.

Additionally, it is grown in all nations that share a Mediterranean border, but Sicily, southern Italy, Spain, and Portugal are the main growing regions.

DESCRIPTION

The fruit is ovoid or obovoid, externally bright yellow and nearly smooth, about 6-10 cm long and 4-7 cm wide, typically with a nipple-shaped extremity and a dry disc-like nectary at the base, and it is composed of about 8-10 carpels and about 8-10 loculi filled with pulp. Fresh juice- Fresh lemons yield about 30% of juice, which is a turbid yellowish liquid that is translucent and freely miscible with water and alcohol. It has a distinctive pleasant aroma and sour taste and contains at least 50% w/v citric acid.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS

Citroptene, citronellal, phellandene, citral, pinene, camphene, citric acid, linalyl acetate, geranyl acetate, and terpinol are some of the other compounds found in limonene.

USES

In addition to having antidiarrheal, antidysenteric, astringent, antiscorbutic, antirheumatic, anti-uricaemic, vitamin-rich, and cooling properties, citrus limonum also has stomachic and carminative effects.

HOMOEOPATHIC USES

By scurvy developing as a result of using citric acid excessively when taken for other purposes, homoeopathic action has been demonstrated.

Citrus limonum has a strong effect on the blood’s circulation and the blood itself; it causes faintness, a weak pulse, hemorrhages, and swellings; it also causes inflammation and painful spleen enlargement; it relieves the pain of cancer; it treats lymphoma; it causes daily headaches; it stiffens joints, especially in the fingers; it gives the sensation of being bruised, especially in the feet; and it causes herpetic eruptions.

THERAPEUTIC USES

Cancer, constipation, diarrhea, convulsions, dropsy, dyspnea, faintness, headaches, hemorrhages, herpes, rheumatism, scurvy, plemitis, and sunstroke.
