A middle aged woman complains of excessive bleeding during the menstrual flow. The condition is MENORRHAGIA.

After getting the person’s medical history, look into the different potential constitutional or local causes of bleeding.

While excessive menstrual bleeding is a common cause for concern, most women don’t experience enough blood loss to be classified as menorrhagia. Menorrhagia is the medical term for menstrual periods with abnormally heavy or prolonged bleeding.

If you dread your period because you have such heavy menstrual bleeding, talk to your doctor. There are many effective treatments for menorrhagia. With menorrhagia, you can’t maintain your usual activities when you have your period because you have such high blood loss and cramping.

Symptoms

Menorrhagia symptoms and signs can include:

  • for several hours straight, soaking through one or more tampons or sanitary pads every hour.
  • to control your menstrual flow, you must use two types of sanitary protection
  • getting up in the middle of the night to change one’s sanitary attire
  • a week or more of bleeding
  • larger-than-a-quarter blood clots passing
  • limiting activities because of a heavy period
  • Anemia symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, or feeling worn out

Causes

Menorrhagia can be brought on by a variety of conditions, some of which are common.

  • Hormone imbalance. The uterine lining (endometrium), which is shed during menstruation, is normally controlled by a balance between the hormones estrogen and progesterone; however, if a hormone imbalance occurs, the endometrium develops excessively and eventually sheds via heavy menstrual bleeding.

Hormone imbalances can be brought on by a variety of conditions, including obesity, insulin resistance, thyroid issues, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

  • Dysfunction of the ovaries.Anovulation, in which the ovaries do not release an egg (ovulate) during a menstrual cycle, results in a hormonal imbalance and may cause menorrhagia if the body does not produce progesterone as it would during a typical menstrual cycle.

  • Uterine fibroids.

  • Polyps.Hefty or protracted menstrual bleeding may be brought on by small, benign growths (uterine polyps) on the lining of the uterus.

  • Adenomyosis.Often resulting in heavy bleeding and uncomfortable periods, this condition is brought on when endometrial glands embed themselves in the uterine muscle.

  • Intrauterine device (IUD).Your doctor will work with you to develop alternative management strategies for menorrhagia, a well-known side effect of using a nonhormonal intrauterine device for birth control.

  • Pregnancy complications.Another reason for heavy bleeding during pregnancy is an abnormal placenta, such as a low-lying placenta or placenta previa. A single, heavy, late period may be the result of a miscarriage.

  • Cancer.Excessive menstrual bleeding can be brought on by uterine and cervical cancer, particularly if you have had an abnormal Pap test in the past or are postmenopausal.

  • Inherited bleeding disorders.A few bleeding disorders, such as von Willebrand’s disease, which is characterized by a deficiency or impairment of a critical blood-clotting factor, can result in abnormal menstrual bleeding.

  • Medications.Heavy or protracted menstrual bleeding can be caused by a number of drugs, including anti-inflammatory drugs, hormone-balancing drugs like estrogen and progestin, and anticoagulants like warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven) or enoxaparin (Lovenox).

  • Other medical conditions.Menorrhagia could also be a symptom of a variety of other illnesses, such as liver or kidney disease.

Complications

Menstrual bleeding that is excessive or prolonged may result in additional health issues, such as:

Anemia.

Severe pain. You may experience painful menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), which can occasionally be severe enough to warrant medical attention if they are related to menorrhagia.
