BELLADONNA

Deadly Nightshade is its common name.

Belladonna always causes hot, red skin, flushed face, glaring eyes, throbbing carotids, excited mental state, hypersthesia of all senses, delirium, restless sleep, convulsive movements, dryness of mouth and throat with aversion to water. It acts upon every part of the nervous system, producing active congestion, furious excitement, perverted special senses, twitching, convulsions, and pain.

For exophthalmic goitre, use the thirty-first potency. Epileptic spasms that are followed by nausea and vomiting. Scarlet fever as well as prophylactic use. Corresponds to the symptoms of “air-sickness” in aviators. Give as preventive. No thirst, anxiety, or fear. Belladonna stands for violence of attack and suddenness of onset. Bell stands for the extreme of thyroid toxicity.

While the retina is blind to actual objects, a host of visual hallucinations throng about him and come to him from within. The patient is acutely alive and crazed by a flood of subjective visual impressions and fantastic illusions.

Head: Palpitation reverberating in the head with labored breathing. Much throbbing and heat. Pain; fullness, especially in the forehead, also the occiput, and the temples. Headache from suppressed catarrhal flow. Sudden outcries. Pain worse light, noise, jar, lying down and in the afternoon; better by pressure and semi-erect posture. Boring of head into pillow; drawn backward and rolls from side to side.

Face: Red, bluish-red, hot, swollen, shining; facial muscles convulse; upper lip swells; facial neuralgia with twitching muscles and flushed appearance.

Eyes: Pupils dilated (Agnus). Deep throbbing in the eyes when lying down. Eyes that feel swollen and protruding, staring, brilliant; conjunctiva that is red, dry, and burning. Exophthalmus. Ocular illusions; a fiery appearance. Diplopia, squinting, and spasms of the lids. Sensation that the eyes are partially closed. Swollen eyelids.

Hematoma auris, acute and sub-acute conditions of the Eustachian tube, autophony—hearing one’s own voice in the ear—membrana tympani bulges and is injected; parotid gland is swollen; sensitive to loud tones; acute hearing; tearing pain in the middle and external ear; humming noises; and pain that causes delirium. A child cries out while they sleep.

Nose: Unreal odors; tingling in the tip of the nose; redness and swelling; bleeding from the nose with a red face; coryza; blood-tinged mucus. Mouth: Dry; sharp pain in the teeth; gumboil; tongue that is strawberry-colored on the edges; teeth-grinding; and stammering.

Tonsils enlarged; throat feels constricted; difficult deglutition; worse with liquids; dry, as if glazed; angry-looking congestion (Ginseng); red; feeling of a lump; dry, as if glazed; contracted; spasms in throat; constant inclination to swallow; scraping sensation; sensitive mucous membrane muscles; hypertrophy of mucous membrane

Stomach: Appetite loss; dislike of meat and milk; spasmodic pain in the epigastrium; constriction; pain radiates to the spine; nausea; vomiting; intense thirst for cold water; spasmodic hiccough; dread of drinking; uncontrollable vomiting.

Transverse colon protrudes like a pad. Tender, swollen. Cutting pain across; stitches in left side of abdomen, when coughing, sneezing, or touching it. Extreme sensitivity to touch, bedclothes, etc. (Laches). Abdomen: Distended, hot.

Stools: Prolapsus ani (Ignatia; Podoph), thin, green, dysenteric, in lumps like chalk, shuddering during stool, stinging pain in rectum, spasmodic stricture, and more sensitive piles.

Urine: Incontinence, continuous urination, frequent and profuse hematuria where no pathological condition can be found, prostatic hypertrophy, acute urinary infections, worm-like sensation in the bladder, scanty urine with tenesmus, dark and turbid urine loaded with phosphates, and vesical region sensitivity.

Male: Prostatic fluid flow, diminished desire, nighttime genital perspiration, hard, drawn-up, inflamed testicles.

Menses increased; bright red, too early, too profuse; dryness and heat of vagina; dragging around the loins; pain in the sacrum. Menses and lochia very offensive and hot. Labor-pains come and go suddenly. Mastitis pain, throbbing, redness, streaks radiate from nipple. Breasts feel heavy; are hard and red. Tumors of the breast, pain worse lying down.

Heart: Brutal palpitation, echoing in head, labored breathing, palpitations with the least effort, throbbing throughout the body, dichrotism. Heart seemed too large. Rapid but weakened pulse.

Extremities: Jerking limbs; spasms; involuntary limping; shooting pains; joints swollen, red, shining, with radiating red streaks; tottering gait; shifting rheumatic pains; phlegmasia alba dolens.

Back: Lumbago, with pain in the hips and thighs, stiff neck, swollen glands in the neck, and pain in the nape that feels like it might break under pressure.

Boils. Acne rosacea. Suppurative wounds. Alternating redness and pallor of the skin. Indurations after inflammations. Erysipelas. Skin: Dry and hot; swollen; sensitive; burns scarlet; smooth. Eruption like scarlatina, suddenly spreading.

Fever: A high feverish state without significant toxaemia; feet are icy cold; superficial blood vessels are swollen; perspiration is dry only on the head; and there is no thirst when the temperature is high.

When closing their eyes or while sleeping, people who are restless, crying out, or grinding their teeth are kept awake by the pulsation of their blood vessels. They also scream out while they are dozing off.
