Excess nasal drainage, which can come from the nose, the back of the throat, or both, can cause a runny nose.

Rhinorrhea, which is actually a thin, mostly clear nasal discharge, and “rhinitis,” which is an inflammation of the nasal tissues, are both terms that are frequently used to describe a runny nose.

Nasal congestion may or may not accompany a runny nose in a person.

Anything that irritates or inflames the nasal tissues can result in a runny nose, including allergies, various irritants, infections like the common cold and influenza, and nonallergic rhinitis, also known as vasomotor rhinitis, which affects some people who experience a chronic runny nose for no apparent reason.

A tumor, a foreign body, polyps, and migraine-like headaches are less frequent causes of runny noses.
