Actinic keratosis (AK) is the most common precancer that forms on skin damaged by chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and/or indoor tanning. Solar keratosis is another name for the condition.

SYMPTOMS

AKs often appear as

1. Tiny skin patches that are crusted, dry, or scaly.

2. They can be a variety of colors, including red, pink, white, flesh-toned, light or dark tan, or a combination of those colors.

3. Actinic keratoses are typically found in people who areeasier to feelthan see.

CAUSES:

• AKs are evidence of sustained sun damage.You are more likely to develop skin cancer over your lifetime if you have them, but since you are more likely to have developed more if you have one AK, you may be at an especially high risk of developing a SCC.
• An untreated SCC can become invasiveand even life-threatening.
