Aegle marmelos (Linn.) Cor., BOTANICAL NAME

FAMILY—Rutaceae

Common names include “Bengal quince” (English), “Bael” (Hindi), “Koovalam” (Malayalam), “Bilvamu” (Telugu), and “Vivam” (Tamil).

The fruit is a berry that is 7.5–20 cm in diameter, globose, smooth, grey, yellowish or greenish, rind woody, pulp sweet and aromatic, and has a diameter of 7.5–20 cm. The tree is a small or medium-sized deciduous tree with 2.5 cm long straight, sharp auxillary thorns. The leaves are alternate, three foliate, but occasionally five foliate.

DISTRIBUTION: It is commonly planted all over India and grows wild in the sub-Himalayan tract rising to 1200 m, as well as in the western Himalaya, central, and south India.

Fruit pulp that is either fresh or partially ripe is used.

HOMOEOPATHIC USES

Abdominal colic, water brash from mouth, flatulence, wind comes out with loud noises, worse in the afternoon; DYSENTERY and DIARRHEA—For amoebic and bacillary dysentery.

DROPSY—Dropsy of any part of the body, swollen upper eyelids from heart disease, dropsical swelling, markedly reduced urine, slight back and lumbar pain that gets worse in the afternoon, and excellent treatment in beri-beri.

Bleeding piles, indigestion, flatulence, bleeding piles coupled with constipation, and a lack of appetite.

FEVER—Influenza, especially when it persists and is accompanied by chronic hepatic and splenic conditions.

IMPOTENCY – Impotence treatment.
