It often happens in people whose feet have become extremely sweaty while constrained within tight-fitting shoes. Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal infection that typically begins between the toes.

Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be spread through contaminated floors, towels, or clothing. Signs and symptoms of athlete’s foot include a scaly rash that typically causes itching, stinging, and burning.

Although it can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal medications, athlete’s foot frequently returns and is closely related to other fungal infections like ringworm and jock itch. Prescription medications are also available.

Symptoms of Athlete’s Foot

The typical rash of athlete’s foot is red, scaly, and itchy, and it usually starts between the toes.

The moccasin variety of athlete’s foot causes chronic dryness and scaling on the soles that extends up the side of the foot, which can be mistaken for eczema or dry skin. Some forms of athlete’s foot include blisters or ulcers.

If we pick or scratch at the infected areas of our feet, the infection may spread to our hands and may affect one or both of our feet.

Causes of Athlete’s Foot

The same type of fungus that causes jock itch and ringworm also causes athlete’s foot, and it thrives in warm, humid environments, on damp socks and shoes.

It is possible to contract athlete’s foot from contaminated surfaces, including towels, floors, and shoes, or from direct contact with an infected person.
