A boil is a localized skin infection accompanied by the production of pus, or a painful, pus-filled bump that develops beneath the skin when bacteria infect and irritate one or more hair follicles, while a carbuncle is a collection of boils that connect to form a connected area of infection.

The face, back of the neck, armpits, thighs, and buttocks are the areas most likely to be affected by boils (furuncles), which typically begin as red, tender bumps that quickly fill with pus and grow larger and more painfully until they rupture and drain.

Symptoms

Boils

Boils can appear anywhere on your body, but they are most common on hair-bearing areas like the face, back of the neck, armpits, thighs, and buttocks where you’re more likely to sweat or experience friction.

  • a painful, red bump that appears small but grows to a maximum size of 2 inches (5 centimeters)
  • Around the bump, there is red, swollen skin.
  • as the bump fills with pus over the course of a few days, it grows in size.
  • the formation of a yellow-white tip that eventually bursts, allowing the pus to drain out

Carbuncles

People who have a carbuncle frequently feel unwell overall and may experience a fever and chills. A carbuncle is a cluster of boils that form a connected area of infection, which causes a deeper and more severe infection and is more likely to leave a scar when compared to single boils.

Causes

Boils commonly occur at sites where the skin has been broken by a small injury or an insect bite, which allows the bacteria easy entry. Boils sometimes develop at these sites. Most boils are caused by Staphylococcus aureus, a type of bacterium frequently found on the skin and inside the nose. A bump forms as pus accumulates beneath the skin.
