Mumps is an infection caused by a virus that’s easily spread through saliva and mucus. It usually happens in kids who haven’t been immunized.

The parotid glands, which produce saliva and are located beneath and in front of the ears and can swell if infected, are the primary sites of mumps infection, though the disease can affect any part of the body.

Signs and Symptoms

2 weeks after the infection, symptoms appear.

The classic signs are:

Causes

Mumps are caused by a virus called a paramyxovirus, which is very contagious if we come into contact with someone else’s saliva or mucus.

  • avoiding proper hand washing and touching objects that have been touched by others
  • Kissing or close physical contact during some sports

Mumps Complications

Getting the mumps as an adult increases the likelihood of serious complications, which include the following:

  • males who have already gone through puberty may experience inflammation of the testicles, ovaries, and breast tissue.

  • Meningitis is an inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.
