HOMEOPATHY FOR REGULAR LIMB MOVEMENT DISEASE | HOMEOPATHY FOR PERIODIC LIMB MOVEMENT DISORDER

92

Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) is characterized by brief, repeated contractions of one or more muscle groups, usually of the legs, during sleep, which are frequently bilateral and are followed by partial (most frequently) or complete awakenings.

As a result of nighttime insomnia, daytime hypersomnia can happen and, at times, may be the only presenting symptom. The patient is typically unaware of the myoclonus and typically complains of non-restorative sleep or of frequent awakenings. The bed partner may occasionally notice the myoclonus. This is frequently seen in middle-aged and elderly people.

Causes

Although the exact cause of PLMD is unknown, it is known that a number of drugs, including some antidepressants, antihistamines, and antipsychotics, can exacerbate the condition. PLMD may also be connected to low iron levels, issues with limb nerve conditions brought on by diabetes or kidney disease, or problems with limb nerve condition as a result of other medical conditions.

The following are all believed to have an impact on or raise the risk of PLMD, though none of them are considered causes of PLMD.

· Restless legs syndrome.

· Caffeine

Antidepressants, dopamine-receptor antagonists, lithium, and some anticonvulsants are some of the medications that have side effects.

Other sleep conditions like narcolepsy and an eating disorder linked to sleep.

Genetic and neurodevelopmental conditions like William’s syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

injury to or tumor of the spinal cord.

Symptoms

Patients report frequent awakenings from sleep, non-restorative sleep, daytime fatigue, and/or daytime sleepiness. The majority of patients are actually unaware of the involuntary limb movements, which are more frequently reported by bed partners.

Management

A comprehensive medical and mental health evaluation.

Some patients may require polysomnography to make a diagnosis.

Care for any underlying physical or mental illness, if any.

• The discontinuation of any existing medications.

Relaxation methods prior to bedtime and instruction on sleep hygiene, which consists of general recommendations for promoting sound sleep but is not a cure for insomnia.

· Psychotherapy, if indicated.

· Drug treatment. Homoeopathy medicines.
