Homeopathy Medicine for Neonatal Jaundice

207

Neonatal jaundice is a yellow discoloration of a newborn baby’s skin and eyes. This condition is brought on by an excess of bilirubin, a red blood cell pigment that causes yellowing, in the baby’s blood.

Neonatal jaundice is a common condition, especially in preterm infants and some breastfed infants; it typically develops because a newborn’s liver isn’t yet developed enough to eliminate bilirubin from the bloodstream. In some infants, an underlying disease may result in infant jaundice.

Symptoms

  • Infant jaundice’s primary symptom, yellowing of the skin and eye whites, typically manifests between the second and fourth day following birth.
  • Gently press on your baby’s forehead or nose to check for infant jaundice; if the skin appears yellow where you pressed, your baby probably has mild jaundice; otherwise, the skin should appear momentarily lighter than usual.
  • Examine your infant in well-lit areas, ideally during the daytime.
  • The color of the infant’s skin lightens.
  • Baby’s arms, legs, and abdomen all have yellowish skin.
  • Baby’s eyes appear to have yellow-colored whites.
  • Baby appears lethargic, ill, or is challenging to wake up
  • baby isn’t putting on weight or isn’t getting enough food
  • baby makes high-pitched cries
  • if your baby exhibits any additional worrisome symptoms or signs

Causes

Jaundice is primarily caused by an overabundance of bilirubin (hyperbilirubinemia).

A common component of the pigment released after the breakdown of “used” red blood cells is bilirubin, which gives jaundice its characteristic yellow hue.

Other causes

  • Internal bleeding (hemorrhage)
  • a blood infection (sepsis) in your infant
  • Additional bacterial or viral illnesses
  • a blood clotting imbalance between the mother’s and the child’s blood
  • A liver malfunction
  • Having bile ducts that are obstructed or scarred in a baby is called biliary atresia.
  • An enzyme deficiency
  • rapid red blood cell deterioration in your infant due to a condition that affects their red blood cells

Risk factors

  • Premature birth.Premature babies may feed less and have fewer bowel movements, which results in less bilirubin eliminated through stool. A baby born before 38 weeks of gestation may not be able to process bilirubin as quickly as full-term babies do.
  • Significant bruising during birth. When more red blood cells are broken down during delivery, newborns who sustain bruises may have higher bilirubin levels as a result.
  • Blood type. The baby may have received antibodies through the placenta if the mother’s blood type is different from that of her child, which would cause an abnormally quick breakdown of red blood cells.
  • Breast-feeding.Babies who are breastfed are more likely to develop jaundice, especially those who struggle to nurse or don’t receive enough nutrition.

Acute bilirubin encephalopathy

The brain’s cells are poisoned by bilirubin.

symptoms:

  • Listlessness
  • Difficulty waking
  • High-pitched crying
  • Poor sucking or feeding
  • body and neck arcing backward
  • Fever

Kernicterus

Acute bilirubin encephalopathy can result in permanent brain damage, which is known as the kernicterus syndrome.

symptoms:

  • (Athetoid cerebral palsy) Uncontrollable and involuntary movements
  • Permanent upward gaze
  • Hearing loss
  • enamel’s failure to develop properly

Prevention

For the first few days after birth, breast-fed infants need eight to twelve feedings per day, which is the best way to prevent infant jaundice.
