  • the tongue is covered in white.
  • Constipation
  • Strong spit, etc.

CAUSES OF BAD BREATH

There are numerous causes of bad breath, the majority of which originate in the mouth.

  • Eating foods like onions, garlic, and spices can also contribute to bad breath because after digestion, these substances enter the bloodstream, travel to the lungs, and affect breath. **Food-**The breakdown of food particles in and around teeth can increase bacteria and cause a foul odor.
  • Tobacco products-Smokers and oral tobacco users are more likely to have gum disease, another cause of bad breath, in addition to the unpleasant mouth odor that comes from smoking.
  • Poor dental hygiene –We develop a colorless, sticky film of bacteria (plaque) on our teeth, which if left unbrushed, can irritate our gums and eventually form plaque-filled pockets between our teeth and gums (periodontitis). If we do not brush and floss daily, food particles remain in our mouth, causing bad breath. Our tongue can also trap bacteria that cause odors. Dentures that are not cleaned on a regular basis or do not fit properly can harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles.
  • **Dry mouth-**Dry mouth naturally occurs during sleep, leading to “morning breath,” and it gets worse if we sleep with our mouths open. Chronic dry mouth can be caused by a problem with our salivary glands and some diseases. Saliva helps cleanse our mouth, removing particles that cause bad odors. A condition called dry mouth can contribute to bad breath because production of saliva is decreased.
  • Medications-Some medications can cause dry mouth, which can contribute to bad breath, while others can be broken down in the body and release chemicals that can be breathed in.
  • Infections –Bad breath may result from dental decay, gum disease, mouth sores, surgical wounds following oral surgery, such as tooth removal.
  • Other mouth, nose and throat conditions-Infections or chronic inflammation in the nose, sinuses, or throat, which can contribute to postnasal drip, can also result in bad breath. On occasion, small stones that form in the tonsils and are coated with bacteria that produce odor, which can cause bad breath, can also be the cause.
  • **Other causes-**Bad breath in young children can be brought on by a foreign body, such as a piece of food lodged in a nostril, or by diseases, such as some cancers, and conditions, such as metabolic disorders, which can produce chemicals that give off a distinct breath odor.
