When one can’t completely empty their bladder of urine, they are said to have urinary retention. This condition can be acute, in which case the inability to urinate is sudden, or chronic, in which case it develops gradually.

Being unable to fully or partially empty the bladder is known as urinary retention, and it is characterized by both difficulty starting urination and difficulty finishing it.

Symptoms of Urinary Retention

Urinary retention signs could be any of the following:

Causes of Urinary Retention

Urinary retention generally falls into one of two categories:

1. Obstructive :Urine can’t pass through the urinary tract freely if there is an obstruction (like kidney stones, for instance).

2.Non-obstructive :Weak bladder muscles and nerve issues that disrupt brain-to-bladder signals are examples of non-obstructive causes.

Non-obstructive urinary retention has a number of common causes, including:

  • Stroke
  • Vaginal childbirth
  • Pelvic injury or trauma
  • a result of medication or anesthesia that affects how muscles or nerves function
  • accidents causing spinal cord or brain damage
